Background
Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) play an important role in the dynamic regulation of the second messengers cAMP and cGMP signaling, by hydrolyzing them. The PDE4D gene encodes 9 different isoforms involved in transmitting immune responses and neuronal signaling. At the physio-pathological level, PDE4D is associated with asthma, is a regulator of airway smooth-muscle contractility, and a potential risk predictor for ischemic stroke.
