CYP51 Proteinas is a sterol 14α-demethylase that acts with an unknown physiological substrate and accepts electrons from the iron-sulfur ferredoxin Fdx. In vitro, it catalyzes the C14-demethylation of lanosterol, 24,25-dihydrolanosterol, and obtanyol, showing stereoselectivity in producing 8,14-diene.
