Anti-Neurofilament
Neurofilaments comprise the exoskeleton and functionally maintain the quality of neurons. They are composed of light, medium, and heavy chains. Encoded by the NEFH gene, the heavy neurofilament protein is commonly used as a biomarker of neuronal damage. Mutations in the NEFH gene have also been associated with susceptibility to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The Anti-Neurofilament Antibody robustly recognizes polyphosphorylated epitopes on neurofilaments and to a much lesser extent, on other molecules such as histones and rhodopsin. The antibody also reacts with neurofibrillary tangles and plaques and cross-reacts with neurofilament medium. Thus, the Anti-Neurofilament Antibody can be used as a cell marker for neurons.
