Target Background

Akirin is a recently discovered nuclear protein with an essential function in the Drosophila melanogaster immune deficiency pathway which responds to gram-negative bacterial infection. Akirin is conserved in vertebrates as at least two genes designated akirin1 and akirin2. In mice, akirin2 functions in toll-lie receptor, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukin-1beta signaling pathways downstream of NF-kappaB to induce the transcription of several immune-response genes. In mice, knockout of akirin1 had no obvious phenotypic effects, but knockout of akirin2 was embryonic-lethal.
