In the assay, MAO catalyzes the deamination of monoamine substrates to the corresponding aldehydes, which are further oxidized to acid. The substrate has a characteristic absorption peak at 360 nm. The rate of monoamine substrates decrease at 360 nm can reflect MAO activity.
