Target Background

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), also known as cachetin, is a memberof the TNF superfamily of cytokines that is a potent lymphoid factor with effecs on a wide range of target cells. TNF exerts proinflamatory signals va binding and inducing trimerization of TNF-receptor 1 (TNF-R1) expressed on most normal and transformed cells. TNF signaling regulates hematopoiesis, differentiation, endothelial cell activation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, tumor progression, and immune surveillance. Dysregulation of TNF or its receptors is implicated in numerous diseases including cancer, osteoporosis, autoimmune disease, diabetes, and atherosclerosis.
