Background
Neuronglial antigen 2 (NG2), also known as chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan 4 (CSPG4), is a surface type I transmembrane core proteoglycan that is crucially involved in cell survival, migration and angiogenesis. In the central nervous system, NG2/Cspg4 is expressed in certain glia cells which are sometimes called polydendrocytes or oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), as well as in mesenchymal stem cells, osteoblasts, melanocytes, smooth muscle cells and macrophages. NG2/Cspg4mediated signaling has been shown to play an important role in the progression of several tumor types including glioblastoma and malignant melanoma. NG2/Cspg4 is also a typical marker for vesselsurrounding pericytes, which contribute to the stabilization of microvessels, the regulation of capillary blood flow and angiogenesis.<br>
