CIAO1 protein is a key player in the cytosolic iron-sulfur protein assembly (CIA) complex, interacting with CIAO2A or CIAO2B and MMS19 to affect different iron-sulfur protein assembly pathways. The CIAO1:CIAO2B:MMS19 assembly facilitates most cytoplasmic and nuclear Fe/S proteins, while the CIAO1:CIAO2A complex contributes to ACO1 maturation and IREB2 stabilization.
