C-reactive protein is a phylogenetically highly conserved plasma protein that is secreted in the liver in response to the stimulation of a variety of inflammatory cytokines. C-reactive protein binds to damaged tissues, nuclear antigens, and certain pathogenic organisms in a calcium-dependent manner. C-reactive protein can be used to detect inflammatory states and activate the immune system[1].
