Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a family of detoxifying enzymes that play a crucial role in cellular defense against oxidative stress. By catalyzing the conjugation of glutathione to a wide range of electrophilic compounds, GSTs help neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and prevent cellular damage. In the context of neurodegenerative diseases, GSTs are increasingly recognized for their neuroprotective functions. Oxidative stress is a key pathological feature in disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) . GSTs mitigate this stress by detoxifying lipid peroxidation products and other neurotoxic metabolites, thereby preserving neuronal integrity. Several GST isoforms are expressed in the brain, and their expression levels are often altered in neurodegenerative conditions. Polymorphisms in GST genes have also been linked to increased susceptibility to neurodegeneration, suggesting a genetic component to their protective role. Beyond detoxification, GSTs may influence cell signaling pathways involved in inflammation, apoptosis, and mitochondrial function—processes that are dysregulated in neurodegeneration. As such, GSTs are being explored as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for early intervention and disease modification in neurodegenerative disorders.

A 1:1000 dilution of SMC-549 was sufficient for detection of GST in 1 µg of Purified GST tagged PmtA by ECL immunoblot analysis using goat anti-mouse IgG:HRP as the secondary antibody.
