SMAC/Diablo protein is a core participant in apoptosis and activates caspases in the cytochrome c/Apaf-1/caspase-9 pathway. It antagonizes inhibitors of apoptosis proteins (IAPs), inhibits the binding of BIRC6/bruce to caspases and destabilizes XIAP/BIRC4.
