The myeloperoxidase (MPO) protein is an important component of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and is critical for bactericidal activity in a variety of organisms. Upon leukocyte stimulation, MPO catalyzes the production of hypohalous acids (mainly hypochlorous acid), thereby enhancing bactericidal activity.
