KPNB1 is a key player in nuclear protein import, cooperating with adapter proteins such as importin-alpha to recognize nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates. In autonomous mode, it acts as its own NLS receptor, facilitating docking of the import/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) via KPNB1.
