APAF1 protein is a key apoptotic component that coordinates cytochrome c-dependent caspase-9 precursor activation and initiates caspase-3 activation and apoptosis. APAF1 forms an apoptotic loop with cytochrome c and dATP, interacts with caspase-9 precursor, and releases mature caspase-9.
