Background
Somatostatin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by islet D cells. It is an important regulator of endocrine and nervous system functions. It can also be expressed in gastrointestinal tract, hypothalamus, salivary gland and some thyroid C cells. It is mainly used for the functional classification of islet cells and the study of endocrine cells and tumors in gastrointestinal mucosa.
