Function

Key element of the urea cycle converting L-arginine to urea and L-ornithine, which is further metabolized into metabolites proline and polyamides that drive collagen synthesis and bioenergetic pathways critical for cell proliferation, respectively; the urea cycle takes place primarily in the liver and, to a lesser extent, in the kidneys. {UniProtKB:Q61176, PubMed:15546957, PubMed:16709924, PubMed:19380772}.

Target Background

The product of the ARG1 gene, Arginase-1, is a cytosolic metalloenzyme expressed predominantly in hepatocytes and plays an important role in the urea cycle by catalyzing the hydrolysis of arginine to ornithine and urea. Argininemia is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a buildup of arginine and ammonia in the bloodstream. Arginase-1 has been identified as a specific marker of benign and malignant hepatic tumors.
