CSAD proteins play a crucial role in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids, catalyzing L-aspartate, 3-sulfinyl-L-alanine (cysteine sulfenic acid) and L-cysteine The acid is decarboxylated to produce β-alanine, hypotaurine and taurine respectively.
