Background
This antibody binds to the fourth EGF (Epithelial Growth Factor) -like domain of mouse COMP, comprising residues 232–252, called the P6 epitope. Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein (COMP) is a disulfide-linked pentameric proteoglycan primarily found in cartilage, but also present in other joint tissues such as meniscus, tendon, synovial fibroblasts, and osteoblasts. As a member of the thrombospondin family, COMP stimulates type II collagen fibril formation. It is released into the blood when cartilage is damaged, making it a valuable biomarker for predicting cartilage destruction in inflammatory joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) .
