Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by monkeypox virus, a member of the orthopoxvirus genus. Monkeypox has two distinct branches: Branch I and Branch II. Common symptoms of monkeypox are a rash or mucosal lesions that can last for two to four weeks, along with fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph nodes. Monkeypox can be transmitted to humans through physical contact with an infectious person, contaminated material, or an infected animal.
