Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), also known as Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (HUGO PTGS2), is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the PTGS2 gene. PTGS2 (prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2) is a gene that encodes an enzyme responsible for catalyzing the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are lipid signaling molecules that play crucial roles in regulating inflammation, pain, and reproductive processes. PTGS2 is expressed in various tissues, particularly in sites of inflammation and certain tumor cells, where its expression levels are often significantly elevated. The activity of this gene is regulated by various stimuli, including cytokines, hormones, and growth factors, making it a key player in pathological conditions such as inflammation, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Due to its involvement in these diseases, PTGS2 has become a potential drug target, especially in the development of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) .
