Glycogen synthase (GYS1) facilitates the transfer of a glycosyl residue from UDP-Glc to alpha-1,4-glucan, a vital step in glycogen synthesis. GYS1's enzymatic activity sequentially adds glucose residues to the growing glycogen chain, regulating cellular glycogen levels and contributing to energy storage and metabolism.
