Aldo-Keto Reductase Family 1 Member C2 (AKR1C2) plays a role in concert with the 5-?/5-?-Steroid Reductases to convert Steroid hormones into the 3-?/5-? and 3-?/5-?-Tetrahydrosteroids. AKR1C2 catalyzes the inactivation of the most potent androgen 5-?-Dihydrotestosterone (5-?-DHT) to 5-?-Androstane-3-?, 17-?-diol (3-?-diol) .
