Ningnanmycin acts as a plant antiviral agent by binding directly to the coat protein (CP) of the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), thereby disrupting its assembly process. This interaction causes the coat protein to dissociate from its discoid structure into monomers, effectively reducing TMV's pathogenicity.
