Background
Zfp-42 (Rex1) is a known marker ofHYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluripotency" \o "Pluripotency"pluripotency, and most notably found in undifferentiatedHYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embryonic_stem_cell" \o "Embryonic stem cell"embryonic stem cells. It is a 288-amino acid protein and has a calculated molecular mass of 32.3 kD.[1]It has been identified in theHYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testicles" \o "Testicles"testicles, expressed at theHYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spermatocytes" \o "Spermatocytes"spermatocytesin the more inner layers of the testicles. Rex1 has been found to be critically important in maintaining proliferative state in mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), while simultaneously preventing differentiation.
