Transforming growth factor (TGF-beta 1 or TGF-β) is a multifunctional cytokine with an important regulatory effect on cell growth, differentiation, and immune function. It can both activate or inhibit the immune system. The tumor inhibitory effect of TGF-beta signaling derives from its ability to induce the expression of multiple genes.
