The ABCA1 protein catalyzes the translocation of specific phospholipids from the cytoplasm to the extracellular/luminal membrane leaflet in response to ATP hydrolysis. It achieves phospholipid translocation by forcing phospholipids through its channels and loops into elongated hydrophobic tunnels in its extracellular domain.
