Neomycin Sulfate, USP Grade
Neomycin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic isolated fromStreptomycesspecies. It targets gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Neomycin can also be used as a selection agent for prokaryotic cells transformed with theneogene orNPT IIresistance gene and to study toxic antibacterial side effects. In addition, neomycin is a calcium channel protein inhibitor and DNase I inhibitor. It can be used in a variety of cell culture applications.Aminoglycoside antibiotics are composed of amino groups attached to glycosides. They bind the 30s ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of the mRNA sequence and inhibition of translocation. Consequently, protein synthesis is inhibited.Antibiotics are often used in clinical in vitro tests known as antimicrobial susceptibility tests or ASTs to determine their efficacy against certain bacterial species. They are tested against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria using panels, discs, and MIC strips by medical microbiologists. ASTs decrease the risk of using an antibiotic against bacteria exhibiting resistance to it, and the results are used in clinical settings to determine which antibiotic (s) to prescribe for various infections. In addition to its use in antimicrobial susceptibility testing, neomycin sulfate is used for food testing in TSN agar to select forClostridium perfringens. It inhibits growth ofEnterobacteriaandClostridium bifermentans. Neomycin can be used to negatively select for plants transformed with plasmid containingAgrobacteriummediated transformation resistance and to cells containingpcDNA3resistance plasmids.Product SpecificationsNeomycin Sulfate, USP GradeFormula: C23H46N6O13∙ 3H2SO4MW: 908.88 g/mol
