Background

XEC is a recombinant SARS‑CoV‑2 Omicron subvariant formed from KP.3.3 and KS.1.1 lineages. First detected in samples from Italy in May 2024 and identified in Berlin that August1, it has since spread globally, with notable growth in Europe and the Americas. Early data suggest slightly higher transmissibility than KP.3.1.1, but current vaccines targeting JN.1/KP.2 remain effective3
