The CD163 protein is critical in macrophages for clearance and endocytosis of hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes, protecting tissues from oxidative damage. It promotes iron recycling by promoting complex endocytosis and heme breakdown, while calcium and pH affect hemoglobin binding.
