Epstein-Barr virus affects most humans. When infection occurs during childhood, it is usually asymptomatic; in adolescents, on the other hand, the virus represents the most important cause of Infectious Mononucleosis. Given the possible confusion of this clinical picture with hematologic diseases, it is essential to use a diagnostic test that has, at the same time, a high sensitivity and specificity. The diagnosis of the Infectious Mononucleosis caused by EBV is strictly serological and can be done by the detection of heterophile antibodies, whose appearance is common in the course of the disease, or using specific evidence to detect the presence of antibodies against certain proteins of the virus.
