Background
The neuronal nuclear protein (NeuN) is a member of the RNA-binding FOX protein family which is involved in the regulation of alternative splicing of pre-mRNA. NeuN emerges during early embryogenesis in postmitotic neuroblasts and remains in differentiating and terminally differentiated neurons throughout the whole subsequent ontogeny. NeuN localized in nuclei and perinuclear cytoplasm of most of the neurons in the central nervous system of mammals, has been widely used as a marker for post-mitotic neurons.<br> Gusel'nikova VV, Korzhevskiy DE.
