Background

Vesicular monamine transporters (VMATs) sequester neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline into synaptic vesicles (Erickson et al., 1996) . Two VMATs have been identified, VMAT1 and VMAT2. VMAT1 shows a higher affinity for serotonin (Brunk et al., 2006) . Antibodies specific for VMATs have been used to monitor expression of the transporter during development and in aging and can be effectively used as a marker for monoamine terminals (Haycock et al., 2003; Witkovsky et al., 2005) .
