Background

Oligodendrocyte transcription factor 1, Basic Domain, Helix-Loop-Helix Protein, Class B, 6 or Class E Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Protein 21 is encoded by the gene Olig1. Olig1 is a transcription factor and a member of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) factor family. Olig1 promotes formation and maturation of oligodendrocytes (oligodendrogensis) . Olig1 is expressed in spinal cord and brain during development, and by oligodendrocytes after late embryonic development. Olig1 is a useful marker for Oligodendrocyte staining. Diseases associated with this gene include Oligodendroglioma and Grade Iii Astrocytoma.
