Background

GABA (A) R, Alpha1 (Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha-1) makes up two of the five subunits in the membrane bound GABA A receptor, the others being two β2 subunits and a single γ2 subunit. The receptor is a ligand gated chloride ion channel found postsynaptically and binds GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. Mutations in GABA (A) R, Alpha1 have been linked to several types of epilepsy.
