The MTH1 protein functions as an oxidative purine nucleoside triphosphohydrolase and is essential for the protection of cellular nucleotide pools. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of oxidized purine nucleoside triphosphates (such as 2-oxo-dATP and 8-oxo-dGTP), preventing their incorporation into DNA and avoiding base pair transversions.
