(±) 8-HEPE is a racemic mixture of 8 (S) - and 8 (R) -HEPE, formed via non-enzymatic oxidation of EPA. Its reported biological activity in inducing barnacle egg hatching is attributed to the 8 (R) enantiomer. This compound is used in research to study oxylipin signaling and marine invertebrate reproductive biology.
