NHC-triphosphate tetrasodium is the bioactive triphosphate form of β-d-N4-Hydroxycytidine. It acts as an alternate substrate for viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerases, leading to its incorporation into nascent viral RNA and causing mutagenesis. This mechanism is studied in vitro using HCV replicon systems and related viral polymerase research.
