SJA6017 is a potent, cell-permeable calpain inhibitor with selectivity for calpain-1 (IC50 = 7.5 nM) over calpain-2, and also inhibits cathepsins B and L. It has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in spinal cord injury models, reducing apoptosis, preserving tissue, and improving functional outcomes in vivo.
