Neostigmine methyl sulfate is a peripherally-acting, reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used to treat myasthenia gravis. It is a research tool for studying cholinergic transmission in vitro and for modeling peripheral cholinergic enhancement in vivo, due to its inability to cross the blood-brain barrier.
