Alrestatin (AY-22284) is a selective aldose reductase inhibitor. It has been shown in vitro to reduce glucose-stimulated angiotensin II synthesis in rat vascular smooth muscle cells. This compound is a research tool for studying diabetic complications, including nephropathy and retinopathy, in experimental models.
