BCL2 protein crucially regulates cell death by controlling mitochondrial membrane permeability. It interacts with caspases in a feedback loop, inhibiting their activity. BCL2 prevents cytochrome c release from mitochondria and binds to apoptosis-activating factor (APAF-1) .
