Target
This gene encodes the light subunit of the ferritin protein. Ferritin is the major intracellular iron storage protein in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of 24 subunits of the heavy and light ferritin chains. Variation in ferritin subunit composition may affect the rates of iron uptake and release in different tissues. A major function of ferritin is the storage of iron in a soluble and nontoxic state. Defects in this light chain ferritin gene are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome. This gene has multiple pseudogenes.

Applications
Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent assay-Sandwich
Detection Method
Colorimetric, OD450 nm
Assay Principle
Aviva Systems Biology Ferritin ELISA Kit (Human) (OKIA00061) is based on standard sandwich enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay technology. An antibody for Ferritin light chain has been pre-coated onto a 96-wellplate (12 x 8 Well Strips) . Standards or test samples are added to the wells, incubated and washed to remove unbound proteins. An Anti-Ferritin light chain - HRP conjugated detector antibody is then added, incubated and unbound conjugate is washed away. An enzymatic reaction is produced through the addition of TMB substrate which is catalyzed by HRP generating a blue color product that changes to yellow after adding acidic stop solution. The density of yellow coloration read by absorbance at 450 nm is quantitatively proportional to the amount of sample Ferritin light chain captured in the well.
