C3 plays a central role in the activation of the complement system. Its processing by C3 convertase is the central reaction in both classical and alternative complement pathways. After activation C3b can bind covalently, via its reactive thioester, to cell surface carbohydrates or immune aggregates. Derived from proteolytic degradation of complement C3, C3a anaphylatoxin is a mediator of local inflammatory process. It induces the contraction of smooth muscle, increases vascular permeability and causes histamine release from mast cells and basophilic leukocytes. In chronic inflammation, acts as a chemoattractant for neutrophils.C3-beta-c: Acts as a chemoattractant for neutrophils in chronic inflammation.

Aviva Systems Biology C3 ELISA Kit (Guinea Pig) (OKIA00034) is based on standard sandwich enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay technology. An antibody for Complement C3 has been pre-coated onto a 96-wellplate (12 x 8 Well Strips) . Standards or test samples are added to the wells, incubated and washed to remove unbound proteins. An Anti-Complement C3 - HRP conjugated detector antibody is then added, incubated and unbound conjugate is washed away. An enzymatic reaction is produced through the addition of TMB substrate which is catalyzed by HRP generating a blue color product that changes to yellow after adding acidic stop solution. The density of yellow coloration read by absorbance at 450 nm is quantitatively proportional to the amount of sample Complement C3 captured in the well.
