Stores iron in a soluble, non-toxic, readily available form. Important for iron homeostasis. Has ferroxidase activity. Iron is taken up in the ferrous form and deposited as ferric hydroxides after oxidation. Also plays a role in delivery of iron to cells. Mediates iron uptake in capsule cells of the developing kidney (By similarity) .

The microplate provided in this kit has been pre-coated with an antibody specific to Ferritin (FE) . Standards or samples are then added to the appropriate microplate wells with a biotin-conjugated antibody specific to Ferritin (FE) . Next, Avidin conjugated to Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to each microplate well and incubated. Then the mixture of substrate A and B is added to generate glow light emission kinetics. Upon plate development, the intensity of the emitted light is proportional to the Ferritin (FE) level in the sample or standard.
