The HNRNPA1 protein is complexly involved in multiple RNA processing functions, packaging pre-mRNA into hnRNP particles, promoting Poly (A) mRNA transport, and regulating splice site selection. Crucially, it binds inhibitoryly to sequences flanking PKM exon 9, favoring the inclusion of exon 10 in pyruvate kinase PKM splicing, thereby generating the PKM M2 isoform.
