This antibody reacts with a 55kD single chain transmembrane glycoprotien, CD4, expressed on T helper lymphocytes, dendritic cells, microglial cells, and cortical thymus cells. Characteristic of CD4 is its four extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains which help it bind to HLA class II molecules when CD4+ T cells interact with antigenpresenting cells or target cells. Another interesting aspect of the CD4 receptor is the fact that it also serves as the primary receptor for the HIV virus.
