During hypoxia in rats, levels of ?-tocopherylquinon have been found to rise. alpha-Tocopherolquinone (Metarene) is reported to downregulate the respiratory activity of mitochondria. alpha-Tocopherolquinone has also displayed antioxidant activities after it is reduced to tocopherylhydroquinone.
