Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by slow progression of multiple renal cysts, leading to middle-aged or late renal insufficiency. ADPKD is mainly related to the mutation of PKD1 gene (encoding polycystin-1 or PC1). The secretion of PC1 has been found in the exosome-like vesicles (100 nm diameter vesicles) in urine, which provides a new idea for the mechanism of ADPKD.
