Serum is a widely used cell culture medium additive. Serum is added to the medium usually in 5% to 10% v/v concentration and it supplies the cells with nutrients, proteins, attachment and growth factors, microelements and hormones. While various alternative additives of non-animal origin are now available, serum remains the most commonly used and cost-effective additive for routine cell culturing applications.
